About Chiloé

Chiloé Island, also known as Isla Grande de Chiloé, is the largest island of the Chiloé Archipelago off the coast of southern Chile, located in the Los Lagos Region. It features a diverse geography, with rugged forests and swamps in the southwest, mountains running from northwest to southeast, and rolling hills and farmlands in the northeast. The island's eastern coast is dotted with bays and inlets, where most towns, including the capital, Castro, are located. Chiloé has a cool, temperate oceanic climate.

Chiloé's history dates back over 7,000 years with the presence of nomadic groups focused on marine resources. The indigenous Chono, Huilliche, and Cunco peoples were living there when Spanish conquistadores arrived in the 16th century. The Jesuit missionaries later established numerous wooden churches across the archipelago, many of which are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Chiloé became part of Chile in 1826, following years of Spanish rule and independence struggles.
